The Latest: Tsunami threat cancelled for Peru, Chile

A U.S. company says there isn’t any longer a tsunami menace from a strong earthquake that struck off Peru.

Earlier, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Middle warned of “hazardous tsunami waves” for some coasts, saying there was a menace to some coasts of Peru and neighboring Chile.

However a later message stated “there isn’t a longer a tsunami menace from this earthquake” and that the middle hadn’t noticed any tsunami waves.

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of seven.three hit off Peru’s coast at 0918 GMT (four:18 a.m. EST). The epicenter was forty two kilometers (26 miles) south-southwest of Acari.

A U.S. company has issued a tsunami menace message for elements of Peru and Chile’s coastlines after a strong earthquake.
