Charlestown Officer Benton Bertram killed in southern Indiana police chase


CHARLESTOWN, Ind. (WLS) —

A police officer from Charlestown, Indiana was killed whereas chasing a suspect Thursday night time, Indiana State Police stated.

Officer Benton Bertram, 33, crashed whereas he was chasing a suspect in Scott Rely in southern Indiana.

The chase began when Officer Bertram tried to cease a Toyota Corolla for a visitors violation in Charlestown. The suspect fled north on State Street 3 and continued into Scott County, police stated.

As the pursuit approached State Street 3 and State Street 56 east of Scottsburg, Officer Bertram’s car left the roadway and hit a tree in the entrance yard of a residence. Officer Bertram was pronounced lifeless on the scene.

The suspect, 35-yr-previous Benjamin Eads, was apprehended in Clark County, police stated. Eads is charged with resisting regulation enforcement inflicting dying, resisting regulation enforcement and auto theft.

Officer Bertram was a nine-yr-veteran of the Charlestown Police Division.
