DOWNERS GROVE, Ailing. (WLS) —
Augie Matthies, a 9-yr-previous boy from west suburban Downers Grove, was born with a congenital heart defect.
We first met Augie two years in the past, when he shared his goals of turning into an NHL hockey player.
“He was enjoying ice hockey, which was a passion. He needed to cease enjoying hockey as a result of his coronary heart situation,” stated Joanna Matthies, Augie’s mom.
Not letting his condition deter him, Augie has changed it up.
“I switched over to baseball because I can’t play hockey anymore because of my heart. Baseball is an excellent fun sport and I’m, nicely, no less than I feel I am good at it,” Augie stated.
Augie was born lacking his pulmonary valve. Since delivery, he is undergone two open-heart surgical procedures and six angiograms.
“In fitness center, in class, once I run outdoors… It’s just exhausting,” Augie stated.
“He is aware of methods to cease and slow down and regroup and get his coronary heart price decrease,” Joanna stated.
Augie is predicted to have more coronary heart surgical procedures in the future, as he continues to outgrow his coronary heart valves.
“Throughout all of those procedures, we have relied on blood donation at each single considered one of his open-coronary heart surgeries and his future surgeries,” Joanna stated, “He needs blood donation. It is important.”
“When I’ve my surgeries, I lose blood. So I want blood to do my surgical procedures,” Augie stated. “It helps my coronary heart valve run better.”
